Twitter can be one of the most effective tools in your growth hacking arsenal. If used correctly, it can be leveraged to effectively grow your audience and position you or your brand as an influencer in your niche with very little capital investment.
Want to get started? Let’s go.
1. Find your niche
You’ve probably heard the phrase “Chase two birds, catch none”, right? Or, “If you try and be everything to everyone, you won’t be anything to anyone”?
The idea here is that if you try and do too much you end up with nothing.
In life and Twitter, you can’t be everything to everyone, so you much decide first who you will be so you can start attracting the appropriate audience. So, pick your niche, stick to it and be sure to make it very clear in your bio what you are about. This will allow you to really frame yourself as a notable person in that niche (more on that later) which will allow you to effectively grow your audience.
2. Promote Content that is Relevant
Now that you’ve got your niche, you need to frame yourself as a notable person in said niche. To do this, consistently promote content that is relevant to whatever niche you decided on. Best case scenario, you are blogging and so you can share original insights along with other related content. If you aren’t blogging, that’s ok too, you just need find and share great content that is relevant.
The goal here is to consistently tweet content that is relevant to your niche so that when anyone stumbles upon your Twitter, they know exactly who you are and what they will get out of following your account. Between your bio and your recent tweets, it should be very obvious what one can expect from following your account. Sure, this means you might not interest everyone. But again, this is ok. The goal isn’t to interest everyone, it’s to attract the people interested in your niche.
3. Connect and Interact with Influencers
The next thing to do to grow your audience on Twitter is to connect with the influencers that are in your niche. Use tools like Followerwonk and Klout to find the influencers relevant to your niche and connect with them. Follow them and favorite, re-tweet and respond to their tweets so you can begin to get on their radar as well as further cement yourself in your niche.
If people see you interacting with notable influencers, you will be perceived as notable too. This will help build your authority and credibility and will make it easier to attract followers. Furthermore, engaging with influencers will later lead to opportunities to leverage their audience through content marketing.. but more on that in another post.
4. Follow People Who are Following Influencers
At this point, you’ve done the right things on the back end and it’s time to start aggressively growing your following. You’ll first want to target low-hanging fruit who in this case are people that are following the influencers in your niche. So, look who is following the influencers and start following them! The idea here is that if someone is following an influencer, the person likely has an interest in your niche.
When you follow a person who is following an influencer, there’s a good chance they will check out your Twitter. When they do, they will see that you are also a person in the niche that they are interested and possibly follow you as well. When they see you interacting with other notable people in your niche, it will further boost your credibility and make it more likely that you’ll get a follow.
5. Engage, Engage, Engage
This last step is the most crucial to long-term success on Twitter. You must continue to consistently engage with the influencers in your niche as well as others that are active in your niche. Suggested strategies for engagement include:
-Consistently monitor your feed and favorite, respond and re-tweet. Check at least in the morning, afternoon and night to stay on top of all the action.
-Search for related #hashtags and engage with them. This is a great way to discover and interact with new people who are interested in your niche.
-Create lists of the top people you want to interact with and make an extra effort to engage with them. Your home feed can become a bit cluttered so by segmenting the people you are following into lists you can more effectively monitor the ones that matter.
So what are you waiting for! Get started with the above steps and grow your (or your brands) influence today!
